Thousands of Spring Bulbs Bloom at Wakehurst Place

Over 100,000 snowdrops and crocuses, plus a swathe of daffodils, are bursting into bloom at Wakehurst Place, Kew's country garden near Haywards Heath, providing dazzling splashes of colour and an early sign of spring. Catching sight of the beautiful bulbs as they as the enter Wakehurst will lift visitors' spirits and give them a taste of what to expect throughout the gardens.

Chris Clennett, head gardener at Wakehurst Place, said: “Snowdrops and crocuses are always favourite plants because their arrival signals that spring is on its way. It is surprising to see the daffodils flowering on the Mansion Lawn so early and primroses already appearing in the woodlands.”

The variety of bulbs is among a wealth of seasonal delights at Wakehurst, which make it the perfect place to banish the winter blues and enjoy a crisp walk. The winter garden is also still providing interest, with glorious heathers, winter flowering shrubs, brightly coloured dogwoods and ornamental grasses providing a rich mix of colour.

In addition to ornamental gardens, temperate woodlands, two nature reserves and a sixteenth century Mansion, Wakehurst is home to the Millennium Seed Bank, the largest wild plant seed conservation project in world. Wakehurst Place is on the B2028 between Ardingly and Turners Hill (Junction 10 off the M23). It is open daily, from 10am, except December 24 and 25.
