Continuing Professional Development and Teacher Training

We run a series of CPD courses for teachers, across all key stages and curriculum subjects.

Technician Training Days

4, 5 & 6 June, Kew Gardens

Scientific technical training for use at KS3, KS4 and KS5, set in the wonderful botanic gardens of Kew.

Science Learning Centre Courses

In association with the Science Learning Centre, London, we are running a number of one day courses including:

Teaching primary plant science through Art (Key Stage 2), Basic Botany (Key Stage 2, 3, and 4) and Field Study Skills (Key Stage 3 and 4)

Other training courses

The schools education department at Kew also offers a number of other CPD options including:

Green DNA for science teachers and technicians (AS/A2/GNVQ) The course focuses on genetic engineering techniques and cheap, safe, practical investigations using plant DNA. You will also carry out a range of analysis techniques from extraction and laboratory electrophoresis to CD and web-based software for genomics and proteomics. Cost £75 per participant. Members of the ASE can bring a colleague free of charge.

Whole School Inset

Whole School Inset can be run on a number of topics, and can be tailor made on request. Most of our courses are run over the course of one day, but twilight sessions can also be offered using Kew's resources. The following topics are offered as whole school inset:

Living Things in Their Environment: Plant Adaptations (Key Stages 2 and 3)

Rainforest Explorers (Key Stages 2 and 3)

Creative Writing using Plants (key Stage 2 and 3)

Training for Beginning Teachers

The schools education department runs a number of training courses for the Institute of Education, Kings College London and other higher education establishments in the training of new teachers.

Sessions include constructing study tours around living plant collections, Plant Adaptations to Environment and Climate, Field Study Skills, Environmental Games and planning a school visit to an outdoor environmental site. Contact the Schools Education Department for more details.
